The Abridged Version
I’m a thirty-something off-and-on traveler, part-time creative, two-time college drop-out, and near twenty year veteran of the service industry – where I split my time between management and merchandising. A couple of years ago I lost my job, and like many others before me, I find myself with little wish to go back to what I know. Many resumes and rejections later, I have decided to pursue my own interests and attempt to break into the video game industry.
There’s a catch though…I don’t know the first thing about designing or developing a game. In early 2012 I launched this site to document my effort, get a little exposure, keep me focused, and offer a resource to others.
The Details
SO YOU’RE UNEMPLOYED?
Yes. There’s really no way of sugar-coating that reality. If you or someone you know is hiring, and you would like to know more about me feel free to get in touch.
TRAVELING? MUST BE NICE.
It was less traveling and more moving around. During my adult life I have lived in the southeast, northeast, and southwest of the United States, as well as southern Australia. There were several stops along the way, and I have experienced the wonder of traveling cross-country more than once.
A Part-time creative, eh?
I’ve had a relationship with the arts since childhood, when I started drawing and making my own LEGO transformers. That evolved into an interest in graphic design as I got older, and eventually to art school. These days I’m more interested in the creative process itself than putting paint to canvas.
you’ve been to college twice?
My first foray into college was just after graduating from high-school, it was a spectacular flame-out. I was not ready. One thing led to another and I spent the next few years traveling around. After settling in a bit, I made a second attempt, this time at the Art Institute. Eventually, I left that experience behind to pursue a professional opportunity.
You Know Nothing At All About Making Games?
Setting aside my many Half-Life 2 achievements and the hours I spent playing Warhammer as a teen, I know very little. I’ve done a bit of scripting with Lua using the World of Warcraft interface, and cobbled together a semi-functional Pong clone using Python and PyGame. More than most, not enough to brag.
What kind of computer are you using?
I’m now on a Gateway laptop running a 1.6GHz mobile Celeron processor with 1GB of RAM. I was on a slightly better desktop until a couple of weeks ago, at which time the motherboard blew a couple of capacitors and the power supply failed. As I’m unemployed. I’ll have to make do for now.
Can I Help Further Your Goals?
Sure, that would be most appreciated! Spreading the word about my site is the number one way you can help. Aside from that, I’ll gladly accept donations to pay the hosting bill. I also keep up an Amazon wish list of books related to the content on this site, which people can buy on my behalf.
